The paper presents ParlaConMe, an Italian software for supporting communication and language based on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). According to literature, most of the Italian AAC software products are developed by building on the English language, and even by simply translating existing ones in English. As a consequence, the communication boards adopt the logic structure of the English language, its grammatical and syntactic rules, its organisation into sub-elements (nouns, verbs, etc.). This can lead the Italian users of these software to limited or garbled linguistic production, grammatically and lexically poor and syntactically incorrect. Addressing these challenges, this contribution intends to present the main technological and linguistic features of ParlaConMe (that means “Talk with me”).
